In 2009, Pennsylvania awarded the first "Special Elk Conservation Tag", also known as the "Governor's Tag", to the National Wild Turkey Federation to be auctioned at that year's NWTF National Convention. That tag sold for $28,000.00, with the proceeds being divided between the wildlife conservation efforts of the NWTF and the Pennsylvania Game Commission's elk conservation program.
Since that time, the PA Special Elk Conservation Tag has traveled the country as a headlining auction item at various wildlife conservation organizations' national and regional banquets, and now resides exclusively with the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation . Most recently the tag was presented for auction at an online RMEF auction held in April 2023 and raised $327,000 in the name of elk conservation!
The winning bidder of the PA Special Elk Conservation Tag is rewarded for their generosity with an extended season from September 1 through the end of the General Season and the option to hunt in any open elk hunt zone.
Since 2011, Elk County Outfitters has had the privilege to be selected by these great conservationists to guide this very special hunt.
